How Gold Helped Cambodian Refugees Escape the War
Dear Investor,
This is a story of human courage and determination that I witnessed in my childhood.
For those who don’t know, I grew up in a little French town and came to the United States only in my 20s.
In 1974, when I was a young teenager, a group of Cambodian refugees came to France. Being generous and hospitable, my parents agreed to foster one family and help them start a new life.
My latest blog entry tells their story, in which gold played a small yet very important role.
I wrote this article to remind myself and investors that anything can happen in this world. Wars, ecological crises, civil unrests, and whatnot. Just because you haven’t experienced something in your lifetime doesn’t mean it can’t happen.
In this political and financial climate, being prepared for the worst is the most sensible and selfless thing you can do for yourself and your family.

Gold is a crisis and inflation hedge,
and should be part of every balanced portfolio. BUT to be a smart gold buyer, you MUST make sure you know what you’re doing before you jump.
In our society, our daily lives can be very taxing. With the loud city noises and our hectic schedules, we can easily become overwhelmed. So how can we overcome overwhelm and achieve our desired results?
Through trial and error, I tried out different approaches to reduce overwhelm in my life. I also observed the results of my clients with the same challenge as well as individuals who were truly living fully, without overwhelm. I noticed commonality between the means that resulted in success. This lead me to identifying the three key strategies to overcome overwhelm and achieve your desired results. These three strategies have no particular order and all three are important. If someone focuses on only one or two of these, they can experience positive results; however, to completely overcome overwhelm and achieve your desired results, it is important to incorporate all three of the following strategies over time.
DARE TO CREATE THE GOOD LIFE YOU WANT! at: 4pchallenges.com
1. Simplify Your Life
Having a life full of complexity is neither fun nor comfortable. Complexity and the details of life can easily contribute to feeling overwhelmed. What if all of the things you currently have unfinished were finished? What if all the little things that you tolerate were addressed and you no longer had to worry about or be irritated by them? By simplifying your life, you'll experience much more ease and less friction, and you will free up more time to concentrate on the results you truly desire.
2. Practice Extreme Self Care
In our fast paced world, many times our physical bodies become the last priority. We drag these bodies around nonstop and we can be indifferent to signs of exhaustion. When we practice extreme self care, our mind, body and spirit are much more likely to assist us in our other efforts by providing strong support including energy, enthusiasm and presence. It is similar to a well-tuned car with a full tank of gas. Some examples of self-care activities include sufficient rest, exercise, healthy food, joyful recreation and quality personal time to do things that you enjoy such as a hobby or journaling. By truly practicing extreme self care, you will experience more energy to achieve your desired results.
3. Celebrate The Unique You
Often in our hectic lives, it can feel like we are mostly doing what we should or must do. Things that we love to do are left for the occasional day off or vacation. Only when we do something that we love to do on a regular and sufficiently frequent basis will we get to experience the level of joy that we desire. If you must use your weaknesses more of the day, it can be very unfulfilling. On the other hand, if you get to use your strengths on a daily basis, you will do the activity very well and it will feel great. Often our biggest results will come from operating in our strengths or personal gifts. By truly celebrating the unique you, you will experience more fulfillment, joy and power to achieve your desired results.

MANILA, Philippines – ICYMI (but, really, how could you have?), Isabelle Duterte’s debut happened on January 19, and President Rodrigo Duterte’s granddaughter spared no expense in putting together a lavish affair that started with a pre-debut shoot in the country’s seat of power and culminated in a grand event held in one of Manila’s toniest hotels. (TIMELINE: The glitz and glamor of Isabelle Duterte’s debut) For those about-to-be debutantes who are taking notes, we asked a few events planners how much it would cost to mount such a celebration.
Pre-debut shoot
By now people will know of Isabelle’s pre-debut shoot, which saw Isabelle bringing in a glam team plus a wardrobe of designer gowns to Malacañang Palace. The resulting photos included Isabelle posing in front of the presidential seal, as if to remind the world who her grandfather is, which then resulted in a sparring match with her own father, Paolo Duterte, on social media.
For the Malacañang shoot, Isabelle wore 3 dresses: a blood red ballgown with a train by Garimon Roferos couture (P600,000), a pale pink gown covered in leaf patterns by Rosenthal Tee (P300,000), and a floral, cold shoulder column dress by Rica Rico (P80,000).
Her glam team was composed of stylist Jeff Galang (P50,000), hair stylist Frankie Bacierto, and makeup artist Winn Ramos (P40,000 for both). The photos were done by photographer Lito Sy (P150,000).
Save the Date video and photos
As if the Malacañang shoot wasn’t enough, Isabelle also held a destination shoot in Australia (P20,000 per airplane ticket, economy class, exclusive of taxes). Isabelle brought another set of couture gowns to the shoot, including a black floral gown and a purple and green gown by Garimon Roferos (P500,000 each), and a black ensemble with eagle print bottoms by Edgar Buyan (P100,000). The photos were done by Sydney-based photographer, JP Velarde (P120,000), while the video was done by Gianne Carlo Chua Visuals (P120,000). Styling was done by Ivan Jeric Digamon (P80,000).
Invite
The invitations to Isabelle’s debut were done by Print Divas. The pink cards, designed with floral watercolor graphics, also include a small LED screen playing scenes from Isabelle’s Australia shoot inside (P1,500 per piece).
Debut
The debut was held at The Peninsula Manila’s Rigodon Ballroom and organized by Rita Neri Events Planning (P200,000-250,000). Outside the venue, guests worked it at a video booth by Hello and Co. Cinema (P80,000), while official photos were done by Lito Sy (P150,000). (IN PHOTOS: Scenes from Isabelle Duterte's grand debut)
Inside the venue was a lavish set up that would make Marie Antoinette proud. It was styled by Robert Blancaflor (P1M), with audio and lights set up by Forsc Ink (P1M). The extravagant set up includes a floral tunnel leading guests into the ballroom, and a collection of chandeliers dangling from the ceiling.
The table settings included mirrored tabletops, gold-beaded showplates, candelabras, and fresh flowers.
Guests were served 5 courses, which included dishes such as seared crab cake, wild mushroom bisque, and a 12-hour braised beef short rib (P4,500/head).
At the end of the night, guests went home with customized perfumes (P800), while two winners of the best-dressed title went home with Hermes goodies (min P10,000).
Debut looks
Isabelle wore no less than 5 outfits on the day of her debut – which is no longer surprising considering all the ballgowns and designer garments she’s been wearing in the run-up to the big night. Her debut wardrobe was styled by Jeff Galang (P50,000). (READ: A rundown of Isabelle Duterte’s debut looks)
She wore a boudoir robe by La Tercera (P10,000) while she had her hair and makeup done. Her hairstylist was Allan Vicentico, and her makeup artist was Winn Ramos (P50,000 for both).
She changed briefly into a Michael Leyva gown for a shoot before the party (P200,000).
For the main event, she wore a Swarovski-studded Michael Cinco ballgown, shipped all the way from Dubai (P2M). (LOOK: Isabelle Duterte’s Michael Cinco debutante gown)
She changed into a crisp, white Orias pantsuit for a dance number (P50,000).
For the after party, she wore a lace gown by Joe San Antonio (P80,000).
She paired her outfits with 3 pairs of shoes by Jefferson Si (P10,000/pair).

Editor's note: In an earlier version of this story, the price of airfare to Sydney, Australia was erroneously quoted as P120,000; it is actually P20,000. The value has been changed in the article to reflect the correct estimate. All prices quoted are approximations and not the exact amounts that were paid to the suppliers.

MANILA, Philippines – The President's granddaughter Isabelle Duterte celebrated her 18th birthday on Friday, January 19, with a grand party.
Her debut was held at the Peninsula Manila's Rigodon Ballroom, which was all decked out in pastel flowers and glass candelabras, with plates and chairs that matched. Your period pain Qs, answered
Hey, ladies! We talked to an OB-GYN to answer your most pressing questions on dysmenorrhea

In Partnership with
MANILA, Philippines – Dysmenorrhea is, quite literally, one pain of being a woman.
So much so that sometimes, when the pain gets too bad, we’re actually hindered from performing well at work or in school!
Many women experience dysmenorrhea when they have their period. But every woman experiences it differently. For some, it can be extremely painful. While for others, it’s almost non-existent.
And while it’s a pretty common experience, just like menstruation, we still talk about it in hushed conversations as if it’s taboo. As a result, there isn’t enough awareness to understand why it happens or know how to deal with it when it hits.
So last November, we conducted a quick survey among our readers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as among our peers to find out what they want to find out about dysmenorrhea.
Here are 10 of your most pressing questions on dysmenorrhea, answered by Dr. Maria Rosario Silverio, MD, FPOGS to help us understand what it is, why it happens, its implications, and ways on how you can cope with it.
What causes dysmenorrhea? Is it genetic? Why is it so painful?
Silverio: Dysmenorrhea is defined as pain felt during menstruation. It usually occurs during menses. Pain may be at the lower abdomen (puson), at the back and thigh area. It usually starts prior and during menses.
There are 2 types of dysmenorrhea:
Primary Dysmenorrhea is described as pain felt 1-2 days prior or during menses and usually lasts between 1-3 days. As the menses progress, the intensity of the pain decreases. More often, it is accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and sometimes irritable bowel or diarrhea.
The most common cause of primary dysmenorrhea is the production of prostaglandins, which causes uterine contraction. If the uterus contracts strongly, it may impinge blood flow, causing a decrease in the supply of oxygen to the uterus. Pain is felt when there is loss of oxygen. Primary dysmenorrhea usually regresses when a woman has given birth or as she advances in age.
Secondary Dysmenorrhea, on the other hand, is characterized by presence of organic or pathologic entity in the female reproductive system. Endometriosis, adenomyisis infection, cervical stenosis, and uterine fibroids are the most common causes of secondary dysmenorrhea, where the pain usually increases in intensity during menses and may last longer than 72 hours. It is not associated with fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or bowel irritability.
Why does the level of pain vary? Are there certain types of food or activities that can possibly intensify the pain?
S: For primary dysmenorrhea, the level of pain varies because of the level of the prostaglandin and the temporary loss of oxygen in the blood vessels in the uterus.
Likewise, pain tolerance may also play a factor which is quite subjective. Women who regularly exercise experience little to no pain during menses. It is best to avoid alcoholic beverages, caffeine, salty food, and smoking.
Why do some women experience it while others don’t?
S: There is no hard and fast rule why this happens, but women who exercise regularly usually experience less occurrence of dysmenorrhea or none at all. Also, the presence of prostaglandin F alpha causes uterine contractility which compresses the blood vessels and lessen oxygen supply.
Is dysmenorrhea connected to fertility?
S: For primary dysmenorrhea, no. But for secondary dysmenorrhea, yes, it is.
Is there any truth to non-medical remedies like eating hot soups, drinking cola or beer, avoiding caffeinated drinks and salty food, intake of vitamin C-rich juices and fruits, and the like?
S: Basically, these suggestions may decrease the pain except for drinking cola and beer. They may help shorten the duration of abdominal cramping and pain experienced during menses.
I’ve been experiencing dysmenorrhea practically every time I get my period for years. Should I be worried? When should I stop self-medicating and go to the doctor?
S: It is best to always consult a doctor if symptoms persist. It is important to be evaluated to know what causes the pain. It might not be primary dysmenorrhea, after all.
Will dysmenorrhea go away as I age?
S: Advancing age diminishes dysmenorrhea.
Are there any exercises or food and drinks that I can do or intake in between periods to lessen the chances of having dysmenorrhea?
S: A healthy balanced diet is key to attain wellness. Enough sleep and exercise to energize our body. Healthy living is needed to have a fit and disease-free body.
How do painkillers work for dysmenorrhea? Are there any long-term effects that I should be aware of?
S: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) – paracetamol, ibuprofen, mefenamic acids, et cetera – are mostly prescribed analgesics for dysmenorrhea. They decrease intrauterine pressure and lowers the prostaglandin (PGF2alpha) levels.
Common adverse effects include hypersensitivity, gastritis, dyspepsia, and diarrhea. If taken on a long term basis, it may lead to gastroduodenal problems, fluid retention, liver dysfunction, and renal failure.
Is it true that you’ll become dependent on painkillers when you take them regularly?
S: My advice will be to take pain killers only if there is severe pain. There are certain painkillers that when you take it on a regular basis, when severe pain occurred, it will no longer be effective. Their tolerance to pain becomes low and so the dose will be higher for them. Of course, it will always be a case-to-case basis.
The women of today are go-getters. They won’t allow anything to get in their way – not even dysmenorrhea. This is why it’s important to truly understand it and how it affects your health.
And while a healthy diet, regular exercise, and painkillers can help alleviate the pain, it’s still important to consult with an OB-GYN. Remember that every woman, every body, is different, so do get medical advice as well instead of only asking your friends or self-diagnosing after Googling information. – Rappler.com

As most of the photos show her wearing this dress, one would be inclined to think that the president’s granddaughter had reached her designer dress quota and stuck to just one look for the party. But many debutantes change into several outfits at their parties, and also, we're talking about the girl who hauled at least 3 designer gowns to Malacañang Palace for a pre-debut shoot, and another set of gowns to Australia for a save-the-date video. True enough, stylist Jeff Galang posted more of Isabelle’s debutante looks on his Instagram stories, including an old rose dress with a matching robe by boudoir clothing brand La Tercera.
Isabelle wore the ensemble as she was getting her hair and makeup done – because when you’re a debutante, you can’t wear just any old robe to prep for your party.
Her next look was an all-white pantsuit by Orias, which she wore for a dance number.
For the after-party, the debutante slipped into a full-length lace gown by Joe San Antonio.

At one point, she also wore a nude Michael Leyva dress covered in floral embroidery, presumably for a pre-party photo shoot.

For the sake of fashion, the debutante braved the night in several pairs of sky-high heels by Jefferson Si.
Isabelle is the daughter of the president’s son and resigned Davao City vice mayor Paolo Duterte, with his ex-wife, Lovelie Sangkola Sumera. Isabelle’s father – who she recenty had a public argument with on social media – was not at her party, and neither was her grandfather, President Rodrigo Duterte. However, Presidential Security Group personnel were seen at the venue on the night of the party. – Rappler.com

SPECIAL DAY. Isabelle Duterte's debut is the talk of the town as she turns 18
MANILA, Philippines – Presidential granddaughter Isabelle Duterte is set to celebrate her 18th birthday on Friday, January 19.
Isabelle, an up-and-coming showbiz personality, is known for her love of fashion, as she regularly posts her outfits of the day on social media. She is being managed by Annabelle Rama, the mother of showbiz personalities Ruffa Gutierrez and twin brothers Richard and Raymond.
Before her grand debut, here's a wrap-up of everything that have led to the big event at The Peninsula Manila.
December 15 – Isabelle, daughter of President Duterte's eldest son, resigned Davao City vice mayor Paolo Duterte, with his ex-wife Lovelie Sangkola Sumera, make headlines as photos of her pre-debut photoshoot at Malacañang circulate online. Some of the photos show her posing next to the presidential seal, which only the President and Vice President are allowed to use. (READ: When is it proper to use Malacañang, presidential seal for private purposes?)
Her photo shoot in Malacañang draws mixed reactions, with some calling her out for wearing expensive gowns and comparing her shoot to a time when the Marcoses would throw lavish parties at the presidential palace.
Malacañang defends the shoot, saying Isabelle's pictorial should not be an issue.

December 22 – Isabelle and her father make headlines, with Paolo scolding her on social media. In a Facebook post on an account which has since been deactivated, Paolo writes: "Just because you were pimped twice by that person doesn't mean I’ll keep my silence! And that mother of yours and tatay-tatayan (father-like figure) who is not concerned with you – well I'm not like them!"
His message is in reference to Isabelle's tweets, wherein she accuses him beating up someone close to her.
Following the issue, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque says that in due time they hope the two will talk and reconcile.
January 11 – A teaser video, taken in Australia, is posted online by Gianne Carlo Chua of GCC Visuals.
In addition, some of Isabelle's photos are also released. One of the photos shows the iconic Sydney Opera House on the background.

A Brisbane-based blogger has come under fire for a controversial Instagram post in which she wrote: “cancer is your body trying to save you”.
Olivia Budgen had set out to challenge perceptions surrounding diseases by suggesting they might not be “bad at all”.
Her comments quickly backfired as commenters accused the “raw food educator” of spreading “ill-informed nonsense”.

“CANCER AND DISEASE IS YOUR BODY TRYING TO SAVE YOU,” the post begins, accompanying a photograph of Budgen wearing a pink sports bra and holding a large green drink.
The young health coach explained that many people wrongly believe disease is an indication that your immune system is failing.

“Being open-minded and changing your perspective around what disease actually is and why it’s happening, will allow you to take back control of your health and realise that your body is ALWAYS working for you, and never against you,” she wrote.
“The immune system is always there to keep the body free of contaminates.
"Unfortunately in many cases this isn't possible because organs such as the liver, large intestine, lungs, kidneys and skin become overtaxed with toxins and don’t eliminate efficiently.”
She added that “cancer is a survival mechanism” defending the body from toxicity.
“Disease is a natural defence mechanism to prevent a much more serious situation from occurring.”

It seems there's always another Belle Gibson wannabe waiting on Instagram

Some Twitter users have been comparing Budgen to Belle Gibson, the Australian blogger who falsely claimed that diet changes cured her of multiple cancers.
Gibson was recently fined more than A$410,000 (£240,000) after she released a bestselling app and cookbook off the back of her claims.
Budgen's post has since been removed from Instagram and cancer specialists have been quick to refute her claims.
“The recommendations in Ms Budgen’s social media post bear no relation to any scientific facts about how cancer starts or how it can be treated,” Martin Ledwick, Cancer Research UK’s head information nurse, told The Metro.
“Her stance is extremely insensitive to people who have cancer and to those who have lost someone to cancer, as it implies that a few changes to diet will save them.”
The Independent has contacted Budgen for comment.

I don't think some anorexic compost-swilling Barbie is the authority on cancer, or on fitness. My best friend, one of the fittest, cleanest-living people I ever knew, died last year of cancer.
It's often in the genes. Not to say you can't minimize your chances of developing it and maximize your chances when fighting it by living cleanly, but this whole 'toxin cleanse mania' craze has been totally debunked. Liver and bowel cleanses are done daily by your own body, it's part of the package. No product will cleanse you.
She does a criminal disservice to people by passing on pop-science nonsense.

Reminds me of an ex of mine - about as smart as a stick. She needs to get out a bit, go visit a hospice or two.

Yes. Thin does not mean healthy or fit. A good balance of fat and muscle, along with cardiovascular fitness, is the answer.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE
Because one man’s anti-aircraft platform is another man’s castle.
Everyone dreams of staking a claim to a deserted island, but few pull it off. Former British Army Maj. Paddy Roy Bates was a bit more proactive; he created his own country back in 1967, and the tiny state is still going strong.
The Principality of Sealand, located on a World War II fortress six miles off the coast of Suffolk, England, was established by Bates as a potential base for a pirate radio station. He declared himself head of state and introduced a constitution and a national anthem. Today it boasts its own currency, postage stamps and official passport.
Sealand started life as Fort Roughs in 1942, one of several concrete and steel islands constructed by the British to fend off German invaders. It was home to 150 servicemen and anti-aircraft guns until it was abandoned in 1956. British territorial waters extended only three miles from the coast back then, so the fort became terra nullius, or “land belonging to no one.”
No one, that is, until Bates showed up on Sept. 2, 1967, declared it an independent principality and dubbed himself “Prince Roy” and his wife “Princess Joan.” The British government acted swiftly, destroying other forts outside British waters, but didn’t challenge the new prince’s claims.
FOLKS CAN VISIT SEALAND, BUT IT’S SUGGESTED THAT YOU SEND A NOTE FIRST.
Peace prevailed — for about a year. In 1968, workmen fixing navigation buoys shouted obscenities at Prince Roy’s 16-year-old daughter, Penny. Her brother Michael, 14, encouraged them to leave by firing warning shots. Firearms charges were filed on the mainland but dismissed by a judge, who declared, “U.K. courts have no jurisdiction.” To Bates, this amounted to de facto recognition of Sealand’s independence.
Fast-forward 10 years. Everyone but Michael was away, when Alexander Achenbach — a former business partner of Bates’ — staged a coup d’etat, taking Bates’ son prisoner and holding him without food for four days before transporting him to the Netherlands. Michael and his father soon regained control, rappelling from a helicopter, armed with pistols and a sawed-off shotgun. German-born Sealand citizen Gernot Putz, one of Achenbach’s lackeys, was imprisoned for treason, and Germany sent a diplomat to negotiate his release — the second instance, Bates argued, of de facto recognition.
It may seem like tomfoolery, but it’s not without precedent. Other European micro-nations include San Marino, Andorra and Liechtenstein, all of which prosper as tax havens and gambling destinations. The Danish enclave of Christiania has prevailed despite attempts to close it down; the Republic of Saugeais, in eastern France, has its own president; the Italian principality of Seborga was ruled by Prince Giorgio I until his death in 2009.
Prince Roy passed away in October 2012, and was succeeded by Michael, who kindly met me at his mainland Essex residence. He’s a formidable figure — tall and broad, with a gaze that pins you to your chair. Like Sealand, he looks like he can weather stormy seas. He’s genial and, like Queen Elizabeth II, owns a Range Rover and is fond of dogs.
Michael spins a great yarn over coffee. He reckons he’s spent two full decades on Sealand, often waiting weeks for a break in the weather to get to the mainland for supplies. Was he frightened by Achenbach’s “terrorists” (his word) back in the ’70s? “No,” he says, chuckling. “I was ready to kill the *****.” As many as 150 people lived on the island in its ’70s heyday, but the numbers have since dwindled to just a few.
These days Sealand provides secure Web hosting and data storage. Cash also comes in through the sale of collectible coins, stamps and noble titles. Folks can visit, but it’s suggested that you send a note first. A Hollywood movie’s in the works, and Prince Michael has written a definitive history titled The Principality of Sealand.
And, perhaps most importantly, in July the family welcomed baby Freddy Michael Roy to the fold — a fourth-generation prince to protect and serve Sealand’s independence.
