If God had such providence over the religion of the Jews to establish them a supreme judge in whose sentence they were bound to consent to, there is no doubt that God provided Christianity with a similar judge or pastor who has the same authority to remove doubts and disagreements concerning the Scriptures. Even Luther originally believed in the authority of the Pope as we can see in his letter to Pope Leo X in 1518 where he actually presents six reasons for proof of authority of the Holy See in Rome and states that Scripture supports these reasons! Calvin himself originally believed in the authority of the Holy See as well, stating the Ancients have honored and revered it. So on what grounds do these Protestant reformers change from being Catholics, scrapping their beliefs to start a whole new doctrine? It is clear looking at the history of the Catholic Church that She does not believe the Pope can err or mislead the faithful in regards to faith and morals, which is based on Our Lord's words that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. Outside of decisions on faith and morals and in all private decisions, the Pope is susceptible to mistakes just as anyone else. Simply put, everything a king says is not law and does not become law, but only that which the king pronounces as king and legislator. So goes the same with the Bishop of Rome; he can make errors outside the chair of Peter, as a private individual by writings and bad example, but with pronouncements on faith and morals in the chair of Peter, Our Lord's promise holds. If all are bound by the Lord to believe the teachings of the Apostles and their successors or be condemned, and those teachings could contain error, what confusion would occur in Christendom with some parties considering one teaching good, another bad, and others occupying themselves in controlling the decisions of their superiors? Consider the verse, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth." John 16:13. How does the Holy Spirit teach, but through the Pastors of the Church? Consider St. Ignatius, early church Father and Bishop of Antioch, who sent his Epistle to the Trallians around the year 107 AD. In it he writes, "For, since ye are subject to the bishop as to Jesus Christ..." and in the same paragraph writes, "It is therefore necessary that, as ye indeed do, so without the bishop ye should do nothing, but should also be subject to the presbytery, as to the apostle of Jesus Christ". This was in the earliest time of the church shortly after the death of the last Apostle. Clearly St. Ignatius here openly states that a Bishop should be obeyed as to Christ himself, and that we should also be subject to the presbytery (priest) as to the Apostles. How much more would this apply to the head bishop of the church in Rome? To Protestants who rather consider Luther an authority, how can you look to a man who blindly excommunicates the Pope, and the Bishops, and the entire Catholic Church in one written Bull while completely ignoring all the facts as presented on this page? Such decisions can only be made out of anger or frustration and not of intelligent facts. And what are we to think about Luther writing to the King of England claiming, "I will be the enemy of the papacy, burnt I will be thy enemy." Are these the words of a Christian? Of an authority? April 13, 2015 Randy Milanovic The concepts behind “social networking” aren’t anything new – ever since there have been humans, we have been looking for ways to connect, network, and promote with one another – but they’ve taken on an entirely new meaning (and momentum) in the digital age. Where we used to have handshakes, word-of-mouth referrals, and stamped letters, today’s relationships are often begun and developed on LinkedIn, Google +, and Facebook. That means savvy business owners have to know and use a variety of social platforms to stay relevant, not to mention take advantage of emerging opportunities. Below, you’ll find what I consider to be the 21 most important channels and tools you need to be aware of. 1. Twitter. Perhaps the simplest of all social media platforms, Twitter also just happens to be one of the most fun and interesting. Messages are limited to 140 characters or less, but that’s more than enough to post a link, share an image, or even trade thoughts with your favorite celebrity or influencer. Twitter’s interface is easy to learn and use, and setting up a new profile only takes minutes. 2. Facebook. Considered to be synonymous with “social media” by some, Facebook is the one site where you’re likely to find friends, colleagues, and relatives all floating around. Although Facebook is mainly centered around sharing photos, links, and quick thoughts of a personal nature, individuals can also show their support to brands or organizations by becoming fans. 3. LinkedIn. One of the only mainstream social media sites that’s actually geared towards business, LinkedIn is to cyberspace what networking groups once were to local business communities. It’s great for meeting customers, getting in touch with vendors, recruiting new employees, and keeping up with the latest in business or industry news. Alongside normal social features like posts, updates, and photo sharing, it also boasts online games and chat features that make it popular with younger users who want to stay entertained while connecting with each other. 13. MyMFB. Created as a Muslim alternative to Facebook (it was previously called MillatFacebook), this site aims to connect the faith’s 1.5+ billion followers into a single social platform. While that might sound ambitious, it’s growing quickly and offers many of the same post, update, and sharing features as the original Facebook, and is already immensely popular in some parts of the world. 14. YouTube. As a video sharing service, YouTube has become so popular that its catalog of billions and billions of videos has become known as “the world’s second-largest search engine” in some circles. The site has everything from first-person product reviews to promotional clips and “how-two” instruction on virtually any topic or discipline. Users have the ability to share, rate, and comment on what they see. 15. Instagram. If you’re looking for a quick, convenient connection between the camera feature on your smart phone and all your social profiles, then Instagram is the answer. Not only will allow you to share via Twitter, Facebook, and the Instagram website, you can choose from a variety of photo filters and invite friends to comment on your photos or ideas. 16. Vine. This site (also available as an app) offers users the chance to share and view brief video clips. While that theoretically offers a virtually endless range of uses, most of Vine’s content is entertainment-focused, with a heavy preference towards “viral” and “meme” clips that are easy to share. 17. WhatsApp. The WhatsApp concept is simple: send text-style messages to anyone else using the platform, but without paying data charges. That straightforward idea has already gathered more than 700 million fans, making the app the world’s most popular messaging platform. 18. vk.com. Promoting itself as Europe’s largest social media site, vk.com is essentially the Russian version of Facebook, with the same kinds of profiles, messaging, and games you would expect. Like Facebook, vk.com allows users to enter both personal and professional information about themselves, and to follow or show support for organizations and businesses. 19. Meetup. Meetup is a perfectly-named platform, because it’s perfect for organizing local groups around specific interests. There are meetups centered on just about everything, from music to hobbies, and get-togethers are almost always open to newcomers. That makes it perfect for exploring an interest and making new friends at the same time. 20. Secret. This might be the best social media app most people haven’t tried. The premise is simple: join into a group of friends (or create your own), and then share an anonymous message. It’s simply not something they can relate to, in fact, he told me, the first time Westerners described this malaise to the chiefs in their village, members of the tribe actually laughed out loud, for it seemed so odd and extraordinary to them. How can anyone not be happy when possessing the greatest gift of all, the gift life, they inquired. In the West, depression and other so-called mental disorders are a very real fact of life for many. This cannot be denied, and to combat these disorders, we’ve developed a full catalogue to describe them, and have created an entire professional medical discipline for diagnosing and treating them, with the result that depression has become an enormously profitable sector of the healthcare industry. The U.S. National Institute of Mental Health provides public information on depression, and while their website fails to comment on its potential causes, it does elaborate on risk factors and contemporary treatments which take a purely allopathic approach which lacks the possibility of actually overcoming depression. “Depression, even the most severe cases, can be treated. The earlier that treatment can begin, the more effective it is. Depression is usually treated with medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. If these treatments do not reduce symptoms, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and other brain stimulation therapies may be options to explore.” [Source] Pills, expensive, continual professional therapy, and electro-shock treatment. With this as the basic plan for confronting depression, it is indeed a hopeless condition, but we now know much more about depression, and the problem deserves a more holistic review. Drawing from my personal experience in having beaten serious depression, from my experiences with shamanic plant medicines where I’ve witnessed many people fully conquer depression, and from the ever-growing body of scientific study on the matter, here are 4 things you should know about depression and spiritual illness. I’ve compiled this summary not as medical advice to anyone seeking help, but merely as a source of contemplation on the matter, as a contribution to conversation on mental health and spiritual wellness. 1.) Pharmaceutical antidepressants are a trap, and they may in fact be making depression worse, not better. The model of viewing depression as a purely chemical imbalance is incomplete and while serotonin does clearly have an effect on mood, we don’t fully understand how this works. The side-effects and risks of using antidepressants are well-documented, and quite dreadful, even including an increased risk of suicide. 2.) Depression may be rooted in physical and physiological issues, being more than just an intangible malaise of the mind. Inflammation of the body has been proven to be a factor, which is something that can be addressed with diet and nutrition. “A multitude of studies now show an undeniable link between gut dysfunction and the brain, chiefly by revealing the relationship between the volume of inflammatory markers in the blood and risk for depression. Higher levels of inflammatory markers, which often indicate that the body’s immune system is on high alert, significantly increase the risk of developing depression.” ~Kelly Brogan, M.D. Furthermore, exploration of the relationship between mental health and the body’s microbiome has demonstrated that properly supporting the body’s bacterial eco-system can positively affect depression. “I don’t even talk about it as a psychiatric condition any more. It does involve psychology, but it also involves equal parts of biology and physical health.” –George Slavich, clinical psychologist at the University of California in Los Angeles 3.) There is a spiritual component to depression, which is not addressed with modern medicine, as spirituality is a subject which evades material science. Anecdotal and experiential evidence, therefore must be given more weight in this discussion. The shamanic plant medicines Ayahuasca and Iboga trigger intense spiritual journeys which are known to reveal the very personal causes of depression and other mental disturbances, while creating an opportunity to release trauma and self-destructive patterns of thought. In some cases, properly facilitated shamanic journeys can even induce a form of spiritual exorcism, where the patient can permanently expel the unseen influences of negative spiritual energies in their life. “Another way to say this, which may make more sense to the Western mind, is that we in the West are not trained in how to deal or even taught to acknowledge the existence of psychic phenomena, the spiritual world.” ~Stephanie Marohn Furthermore, research into the therapeutic benefits of LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, MDMA and ketamine, add supporting evidence to the hypothesis that metaphysical experiences can aid in treatment of depression. 4.) Depression may be a warning for our society, a canary in the coal mine, if you will, giving us a clue that something is deeply out of balance in our modern world and must be addressed. This could be an endemic spiritual crisis, a sign of our warped relationship with nature, or a type of blowback we suffer as a result of the inherent violence and injustice in our culture. “In the shamanic view… mental disorders are spiritual emergencies, spiritual crises, and need to be regarded as such to aid the healer in being born.” ~Stephanie Marohn The shamanic view of spiritual illness also includes the importance of ritual, initiation, rites of passages and ceremony in life as paths of maturation for the spirit, all of which have been replaced culturally with materialism, consumerism, distraction and the shattering of communal living. “The abandonment of ritual can be devastating. From the spiritual view, ritual is inevitable and necessary if one is to live. To say that ritual is needed in the industrialized world is an understatement. We have seen in my own people that it is probably impossible to live a sane life without it.” ~Dr. Malidoma Patrice Somé, Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community Final Thoughts There is no single idea, model, or solution that fits every case of depression, for suffering of this nature is intensely personal and individual. That said, there are major pieces of the puzzle absent from the established Western medical/therapeutical/pharmaceutical model of treatment, which when considered, greatly add to our understanding of depression. “I took my doctors recommendations and took the pills, but I quickly realized that the side-effects and the personality changes that the drugs induced in me were not something that I, nor my family, could live with. Spend More Money on Experiences Truly happy people are very mindful of spending money on physical items, opting instead to spend much of their money on experiences. “Experiential purchases” tend to make us happier, at least according to the research. In fact, a variety of research shows that most people are far happier when buying experiences vs. buying material goods. Here are some reasons why this might be, according to the literature: Experiences improve over time. Aging like a fine wine, great experiences trump physical items, which often wear off quickly (“Ugh, my phone is so old!”). Experiences can be relived for years. People revisit experiences more often. Research shows that experiences are recalled more often than material purchases. You are more likely to remember your first hiking trip over your first pair of hiking boots (although you do need to make that purchase, or you’ll have some sore feet!). Experiences are more unique. Most people try to deny, but we humans are constantly comparing ourselves to one another. Comparisons can often make us unhappy, but experiences are often immune to this as they are unique to us. Nobody in the world will have the exact experience you had with your wife on that trip to Italy. We adapt slowly to experiences. Consumer research shows that experiences take longer to “get used to.” Have you ever felt really energized, refreshed, or just different after coming back from a great show/dinner/vacation? It is harder to replicate that feeling with material purchases. Experiences are social. Human beings are social animals. Did you know that true solitary confinement is often classified as “cruel and unusual” punishment due to the detrimental effects it can have on the mind? Experiences get us out of our comfort zone, out of our house, and perhaps involved in those close relationships we need to be happy.
